Literature, writing, listening, speaking, and critical thinking, all components of the Academic Standards for English Language Arts, are emphasized in English 8. Students read, discuss, and analyze poetry, novels, and non-fiction pieces. Written assignments endorse their understanding of the text as well as the ability to convey their command of the English language. The emphasis in writing is to develop a central idea and follow the formal writing process. Standard usage, correct conventions, organization, and strong word choices are taught and evaluated in conjunction to the writing process. Students conduct research using traditional methods as well as the exploding world of technology. Public speaking and listening skills are developed informally through discussion and formally through the presentation of required speeches. The never-ending importance of clear communication in all aspects of life is highlighted. Through literature and written and oral communication, English 8 comes alive through the appreciation and application of powerful language!!
